Statistics: 174km, 108 miles, 86 degrees Fahrenheit, 30 degrees celsius, weather sunny to cloudy, barely any wind, 7 liters (1.85 gallons) of water or Gatorade, coffee, beer.

Today's journey

began a little later than planned, because I found myself chatting a bit (again) during breakfast.  I am often approached by people who are asking where do I come from and where am I going, what am I doing.  Coming to find out that many people are of German descent or were stationed in Germany ones upon a time. During these talks I am realizing that they actually all had good experiences and nice memories of their time in Germany.

The ride itself today was very nice, although it has been the longest distance that I have traveled in one day since the beginning of my trip.  The minute the rolling hills disappeared the country side changed back to sweet corn and soy bean crop. Today's traffic was very light on Highway 34 and often I found myself riding with nobody in sight for minutes at a time.  The biggest change in scenery for me today where the trains passing me, since the railway line ran parallel to the highway.  The length of the train is incredible.  I counted the wagons on one of the shorter trains and I counted 135. This was a smaller train which was pulled by only one locomotive.  You can see on a photo I took of part of the train,  that one was pulled by 4  locomotives!  Even so I stood on top of a bridge going over the train tracks, I was only able to capture part of it.

During my second breakfast in Seward (a pretty busy village) I had a nice conversation with an  80+ year-old farmer who complained, among other things about the price of crop having dropped below the cost of production. When I told him that we had similar issues with our milk production at home, he was really surprised. Many people have already approached me with regards to the proposed referendum on United Kingdom membership of the European Union-vote and the consequences it could have on us, and I like many others find it difficult to answer.

Large bust Georg H. Clayton Campground

When I arrived shortly after 5 pm, having just traveled 163km (101 miles) I found that the office was vacant. The campsite was almost empty, which  was okay with me, but it did not work for me because it had no shower facilities. The restrooms consisted only of a sink and toilet and that just was not enough for me today.  So I headed back to Grand Iceland to search for a hotel and for that I needed internet or cell phone access. When I finally had cell phone access, oh shock!  All hotels were booked.  There was not a single room available within a 30 km radius (19 miles). Since I was already in town, I thought that perhaps showing up in person might bring me better luck. But the result was the same, everything was fully booked.

When I got to the third Motel at least 1 room, a smoking room only, was available and so I biked over there. The lobby was already full of people looking for rooms.

Met another nice person

While I was waiting in line at the check in counter, I ended up chatting with Nick Aloi, who was born in Italy. We talked about my bike ride and Nick was impressed with my endeavor.   Nick was in line in front of me and he would have gotten the last available room because he out of all people was the first one who had requested the room. But what does Nick do?  Nick gave up his room for me, stating that I have more need for this room than he does and commenting that it is easier for him to find another room as he is traveling by car.  The nice lady receptionist then somehow found him another room further away and that room was also more expensive.   I really have to ask myself (the German expression is “grab myself by my nose" what would I have done in this situation had the roles been reversed?  I was so touched by his gesture and asked for his name so that I can at least mention him by name on my blog and I very gratefully shook his hand.  This was a total random act of kindness and Christian love as I have now had the luck to experience a few times on my trip.  It triggers a total feeling of happiness and the memories will stay with me for the rest of life.  I hope that if the time comes and the situation calls for,  that I will be as generous as well.

Today’s photos

show views of the small town of Seward, many trains, irrigation systems. Photos of thunder clouds forming or perhaps something else?  Entrance to the municipal airport York with fighter jet, photos of the hotel rooms which are all arranged around the pool inside the motel (I did use the pool).  The lady at the reception recommended the local "PUB & GRUB” which turned out to be an absolute gem. HereI was able to eat great home made food and very little money and I at a lot.  Was able to eat right before closing time.
